PlenOptika, Inc.

Shivang is a native of California, earned his BS in Bioengineering with a minor in chemistry from Berkeley in 2004 where he also did research at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. Upon graduation, he worked at Celera Genomics (South San Francisco) as a synthetic chemist before joining the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington, Seattle in 2005. He focused on the development of nanoparticle-based probes for the multiplexed and ultrasensitive detection of cancer biomarkers from solution. During this time, he was awarded a NSF Graduate Fellowship and College of Engineering Dean’s Award. Ever curious, he completed the Program in Technology Commercialization (Department of Bioengineering) and Technology Entrepreneurship Certificate (Foster Business School, Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship) and was later awarded Best Innovation and Finalist Prizes at various business plan competitions.

In 2011, he joined the inaugural class of the MIT-Madrid M+Visión Fellowship immediately after concluding his PhD in Bioengineering & Nanotechnology. During the 3 year Fellowship, he focused on addressing unmet medical needs, was in way too many business plan competitions (finalists in the MIT $100k, MassChallenge, and Harvard President's Challenge), applied for numerous patents, published a bit, lost some hair and had the rest turn grey. Specifically, he co-developed (with other Fellows and collaborators in Madrid and Boston) a novel high-throughput imaging cytometry platform and a low-cost

autorefractor to improve access to basic eye in global health settings; the latter is now a startup which he co-founded called PlenOptika, Inc. which is funded by the Indo-US Science & Technology Endowment Fund. He is interested in the interface between chemistry, nanotechnology and bioengineering, and is also passionate about anthropology, economics, Indian classical music (studies tabla), stand-up comedy (tried it a few times), mentoring/teaching, crazy hikes, running with the bulls, traveling, and trying to live a worthy and interesting life.
